What is a Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa?

The Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa, also known as SMC visa, provides those eligible with a direct pathway to residency in New Zealand.

The aim of this type of visa is to help stimulate the economic growth of New Zealand, while also providing people from other countries the opportunity to put their skills and qualifications to use as they explore life in New Zealand.

You do not apply for a Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa, instead you send an Expression of Interest to Immigration New Zealand, where you demonstrate how you meet the eligibility criteria which is a “points-based” system. If you meet the points criteria, your application will be selected from a pool, and you will be invited to apply for your skilled migrant category resident visa.

How do you obtain a Skilled Migrant Resident Visa?

Obtaining a skilled migrant category resident visa in New Zealand is a two-stage process where you must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to Immigration New Zealand. Your EOI should include information including the points your skills, qualifications and health can help you to acquire through the points-based system.

For your EOI to be selected from the pool it must meet a minimum number of points – as of October 9th, 2023, the number of points required by the New Zealand government is 6. (The points system was updated in October 2023, where the previous system required applicants to acquire 180 points).

Once your EOI has been selected, the next stage commences and this is where you will be invited to submit an application for the Skilled Migrant Visa where you can provide more information regarding your eligibility for this type of visa.
