If your partner is a New Zealand citizen or they hold a relevant visa, you could be eligible to apply for a visa to come to New Zealand.

There are a wide range of partnership-based visas for New Zealand that allow the partners of visa holders and/or citizens to come to New Zealand for the same time frame as their partner’s visa.

Certain types of visas allow you, as the visa holder’s partner, to be able to study, work, or live in New Zealand. Each partner visa option has certain eligibility requirements and restrictions that must be adhered to, however there are many different options available.

One key requirement of all partnership-based visas is that you must prove that you and your partner are living in genuine and stable relationship.

Partner Visa Types

Visas for Partners of New Zealand Citizens or Resident Visa Holders

If your partner is a citizen of New Zealand or holds a resident visa for New Zealand, you may be eligible for a number of different visas, including:

  • Partner of New Zealander Resident Visa
    this visa allows those who have a partner who is a New Zealand citizen or resident visa holder, to apply for residency in New Zealand. You will be able to live work and study in New Zealand. You will be able to stay indefinitely.
  • Partner of a New Zealander Visitor Visa
    if your partner is a New Zealand citizen or resident visa holder, you can apply to visit New Zealand. You can explore New Zealand and study for up to 3 months. You can stay for up to 24 months.
  • Partner of a New Zealander Work Visa
    with this visa, if your partner is a New Zealand citizen or resident, you can apply for a work visa. You can work in New Zealand for the duration of your visa and study for up to 3 months. You will be able to stay for between 1-2 years with this type of visa.

Each of these visas have certain restrictions and allowances, including the length of time that you can stay in New Zealand – from 1 year to indefinitely.

Partner Visa Types

Visas for Partners of New Zealand Student Visa Holders

If your partner holds a New Zealand study visa, you may be eligible to apply for a number of different New Zealand visas too. Some of the visas you could apply for include:

  • Partner of a Student Visitor Visa
    this visa allows you to visit New Zealand if you have a partner who is studying on a visa in New Zealand. You can study with type of visa for up to 3 months but cannot work. You can stay for the duration of your partner student visa.
  • Partner of a Student Work Visa
    if your partner holds a relevant study visa in New Zealand, you may be able to apply to work in New Zealand for the same duration as their visa. You can also study for up to 3 months with this type of visa.
  • Partner of an NZ Scholarship Student Work Visa
    this visa type allows you to work in New Zealand while your partner is in New Zealand on an MFAT-funded NZ Scholarship. You can stay for the same duration as their visa.

Certain restrictions and allowances apply, and specific requirements will need to be met for each visa type too.

Partner Visa Types

Visas for Partners of New Zealand Military Visa Holders

If your partner holds a military visa in New Zealand, you could be eligible for a number of different New Zealand visas, including:

  • Partner of Military Visitor Visa
    this visa allows you to visit New Zealand while your partner is in New Zealand on their military visa. You can visit for the same duration as your partner’s military visa, you can study for up to 3 months, but you cannot work during your time in New Zealand.
  • Partner of Military Work Visa
    with this visa you can come to New Zealand for the same duration as your partner’s military visa period and you can work during your time in New Zealand. You can also study for up to 3 months.

Certain restrictions and allowances apply, and specific requirements will need to be met for each visa type too.

Visas for Marriage in New Zealand

If you plan to visit New Zealand to marry your partner who is a New Zealand citizen or resident, there are various visa options available to you based on your circumstances. These are:

  • Culturally Arranged Marriage Visitor Visa
    if you have recently married a New Zealand citizen in an arranged marriage or plan to marry in New Zealand, this visa allows you to visit New Zealand. The aim of this visa is to allow you to start living with your partner to then be able to apply for a partnership visa.
  • General visitor visa
    this visa is the right option if you plan to marry your New Zealand based partner when the marriage has not been arranged. These visas are usually issued for no longer than 3 months.

Certain criteria must be met, and allowances and restrictions do apply.
