Immigration New Zealand is extending post study work visa New Zealand eligibility to certain Level 7 Graduate Diploma graduates. It is also clarifying how Postgraduate Diplomas and Master’s degrees qualify. The conditions are specific. If you pick the wrong course, or enrol the wrong way, you could lose eligibility before you start.

Who Qualifies for the Post Study Work Visa NZ Under the New Rules

The Four Conditions for Level 7 Graduate Diploma Holders

To qualify, you must meet all four conditions:

Complete a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7. The NZQCF is New Zealand’s qualification framework. Level 7 is equal to bachelor’s level.
Study full-time in New Zealand for the full length of the qualification.
Stay enrolled for the full duration. You cannot shorten the course with cross-crediting or recognition of prior learning (RPL).
Hold a bachelor’s degree from New Zealand or overseas. There is no time limit on when you earned it.

This is good news for professionals who graduated years ago. A 2014 engineering degree from India counts just as much as a recent one. You also do not need an International Qualification Assessment, but INZ may check that your degree is genuine.

How Long the Visa Lasts

The visa matches the time you spent studying the Graduate Diploma in New Zealand, up to one year. It comes with open work conditions, so you can work for almost any employer in any role.

What If You Don’t Hold a Bachelor’s Degree?

You have two possible outcomes:

If your Graduate Diploma is on INZ’s List of qualifications eligible for a Post-Study Work Visa, you can still qualify. However, you must work in the occupation named on that list.
If it is not on the list, you are not eligible. Instead, you can apply for the new 6-month Short-Term Graduate Work Visa.

Postgraduate Diplomas and Master’s Degrees: The 30-Week Rule

Postgraduate Diploma (Level 8)

An eligible Postgraduate Diploma may lead to a 1-year post study work visa.

Master’s Degree (Level 9)

An eligible Master’s degree may lead to a 3-year visa. You must complete at least 30 weeks of full-time study while enrolled in the Master’s programme itself.

Moving From a Postgraduate Diploma Into a Master’s

Many students complete a Postgraduate Diploma and then use its credits to shorten a Master’s. INZ assesses the Master’s separately, and transferred credits do not count toward its 30 weeks. If the Master’s portion is too short, you may only receive the 1-year visa based on your diploma. Check this before you accept any credit transfer.

evidence of the Graduate Diploma
a copy of their bachelor’s degree certificate, showing the qualification type and awarding institution
an official academic transcript

From 16 November 2026, applications go through enhanced Immigration Online (ADEPT). Paper applications will no longer be accepted from that date.

Keep two more points in mind. You can only receive one Post-Study Work Visa in your lifetime, even if you later study at a higher level. However, this visa lets you support your partner and dependent children for visitor, work or student visas, provided they meet the requirements.

Is the course full-time and taught in New Zealand for its entire length? Online or part-time study will not qualify.
