The Best Pathway to a New Zealand Work and (Potentially) Resident Visa

In our previous articles, we addressed common questions from people worldwide about working in New Zealand. In this article, we will explore how studying in New Zealand can lead to work opportunities and potentially permanent residency.

Benefits of Coming and Studying in New Zealand on a Student Visa

Benefit 1 : Creating Your Own Luck

Waiting for an accredited employer to offer you employment and sponsor your visa can feel like navigating a dark tunnel with no end. Imagine being able to control your timing to live and work in New Zealand! Most student visas allow holders to work part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer and Christmas holidays. This gives you an advantage over those still outside New Zealand.

Some of INZ’s policies change after a period of notification, with new policies taking effect on a specified date. For example, an announcement on 9 August 2024 that NZ visa fees will increase effective from 1 October 2024. However, some policies can change immediately upon announcement by Immigration New Zealand. For instance, there was a sudden announcement that those on ANZSCO Level 4 and Level 5 will no longer be eligible to sponsor their spouse/partner and children for a visa (unless the visa application was already lodged with INZ, or an exemption applies).

You might have heard of the “Resident Visa 2021” issued during the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, New Zealand faced a labour crisis, leading Immigration New Zealand to introduce this one-off visa, which now the application is closed.

Here’s a brief overview of the “Resident Visa 2021”:

To be eligible, you needed to:

  • Be in New Zealand on 29 September 2021, and
  • Hold an eligible visa on 29 September 2021, or have an application for an eligible visa submitted on that date that was later granted.

You also needed to meet one of the following criteria:

  • Settled: Have lived in New Zealand for three or more years, or
  • Skilled: Earn at or above the median wage (NZD $27 per hour), or
  • Scarce: Work in a role on a scarce list.

When policies change, they often favor those already in New Zealand. Therefore, if you struggle to secure a sponsored work visa, creating your own opportunities by studying in New Zealand might be your best path. Disclaimer: We understand that studying in New Zealand requires resources such as funds and proof of genuine intent, so it may not be feasible for everyone.

Benefit 2 : Your Entry to “Kiwi Experience”

Holding a part-time work right while on a student visa boosts your prospects. Employers can hire you immediately without needing to sponsor your visa. Gaining work experience in New Zealand, whether as a cashier or waiter, is invaluable. Employers often seek candidates with “Kiwi experience”—meaning experience working with New Zealanders and understanding the local business landscape.

If you’re eligible for a Post-Study Open Work Visa after completing your studies, you can work full-time for any employer. This experience further enhances your job prospects and prepares you for long-term success in New Zealand.

Benefit 3 : Higher chance for residency

Those who have obtained a New Zealand qualification at Level 7 degree (Bachelor’s degree) can claim 3 points out of 6 required points for eligibility under the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa. Those who have completed a PhD can claim all 6 points once they have secured employment and meet the criteria. This interesting topic will be discussed in our next article.
